In 2021, KickCancer created a Patient Committee where patients can choose how they would like to contribute. We work across three levels of involvement:
Some patients and parents prefer to stay informed about our advocacy work, research, and projects, without feeling the need to take on an active role in the Committee.
Engaged patients contribute by taking part in surveys or focus group discussions. KickCancer relies on their input to inform specific topics and to improve research and care through a fact-based understanding of the patient experience.
Becoming an engaged patient requires only a limited time commitment, yet it significantly helps KickCancer deepen its understanding of the Belgian paediatric cancer landscape.
Expert patients are selected based on their skills, have completed dedicated training, and are willing to commit regularly to KickCancer’s advocacy activities.
This training programme, developed in collaboration with the Patient Expert Centre (PEC), enables participants to build on their lived experience and become “patient experts.” They gain an understanding of how new treatments are developed through evidence-based research and learn how to articulate the patient perspective in discussions with researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and public authorities.
As a result, expert patients can play a central role in regulatory discussions on paediatric cancers and in clinical working groups, representing the collective voice of patients.
They are also trained to provide peer-to-peer support to newly diagnosed patients and their families.
