KickCancer’s tools for patients

Based on real patients’ feedback, KickCancer developed tools to support patients who are in treatment today. To develop good material, we worked with patients, healthcare professionals, copywriters, graphic designers and cartoonists, all working towards the same goal: making sure the tools are user-friendly and attractive to use.

The following tools are currently available in all Belgian paediatric cancer units:

MY COMPANION - Support Kit

MY COMPANION is a set of booklets presented in a carefully designed carry case, created to support families of newly diagnosed children as they navigate the “cancer storm.” Inside the carry case, families will find clear, practical information addressing their most pressing needs and questions throughout their child’s cancer journey, including medical and everyday concerns, as well as concrete advice to help them cope day to day.

The library of resources

We developed a list of websites providing reliable, quality-checked, scientific information about paediatric cancer. These websites have been reviewed and verified by patients and patients’ representatives, the Anticancer Fund, the Belgian Society for Paediatric Haemato-Oncology (BSPHO) and KickCancer. You can safely rely on the information provided on these websites.

Peer-to-peer support

Patients undergoing treatment often benefit from exchanges with peers, as those facing similar challenges are best placed to understand their experience.

Expert patients at KickCancer who wish to support others during their treatment journey can take part in an additional, dedicated training programme on peer-to-peer support for real-life situations.

Any patient in treatment today can contact us to seek support from a fellow former, patient.

The Framily Etiquette

Many people struggle to find the right words when they learn that a friend, family member, or colleague has a child with cancer. That is why we created the Framily Etiquette: a set of gentle guidelines offering suggested wording and fall-back phrases for moments when words are hard to find.

Future tools

Today, we are developing a School Kit to help schools support a child’s safe return to the classroom, while also giving classmates the opportunity to have their legitimate questions and concerns addressed.

As an organisation for patients, by patients, we value lived experience. If there is a resource, tool, or form of support you wish had existed while you or your child was in treatment, we would love to hear from you.
